More About Toronto…

“Toronto” is a derivation of a Mohawk word meaning “trees standing in the water.” The name appears on French maps as early as the 1680s. Iroquois, Wendat (Huron) and Algonkian speakers dominated the area through to the end of the 1700s. These groups discovered the overland route between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron. This “Toronto Passage” became a major traffic route for both indigenous and later European settlers.
